I had my eyes wide open as I searched for a parking spot today in lower Manhattan. As time went by, I wondered if I would ever find a spot, but eventually I did. I then hopped out of the car eager to get to where I was going.
Later on, on my walk back to my parking spot, I was drawn to some orange writing on the curb right by my car. I looked closer, and behold were the words “KEEP OPEN.” And just like that I was grateful for all the circling I had done that morning, and that it was there that I ended up parking.
When we approach life with open eyes and an open mind, free from our preconceived notions and opinions we make room unexpected joy and possibilities. We also become aware of the blinders or limitations we place on ourselves (for example: “That food is not my type...” “That person is not my type…” “I can’t do that...”). What can be scary is that sometimes we don't even realize they are there since we've have them for long enough that they can feel like part of us.
To be open then is to be aware of our self-imposed limitations and break through them. To be open is to allow all the goodness that surrounds us to be part of us. To be open is to return to the child within us, who, way back when, didn’t have any self imposed limitations that would of closed them off from people/experiences/ideas.
